About Body Fat Calculator

The Body Fat Calculator estimates your body fat percentage based on physical measurements. Body fat percentage is the proportion of fat in your body compared to lean mass (muscle, bone, organs, etc.).

Calculation Methods

Navy Method

The Navy Method, developed by the US Navy, uses measurements of the neck, waist (and hips for women) along with height to estimate body fat percentage. It's considered more accurate than BMI for most people.

  • For men: % Body Fat = 86.010 × log10(waist - neck) - 70.041 × log10(height) + 36.76
  • For women: % Body Fat = 163.205 × log10(waist + hip - neck) - 97.684 × log10(height) - 78.387

BMI Method

This method uses your Body Mass Index (BMI) along with age and gender to estimate body fat percentage. It's less accurate than methods that involve more measurements but provides a good starting point.

  • For adults: % Body Fat = (1.20 × BMI) + (0.23 × Age) - (10.8 × gender) - 5.4
  • Where gender = 1 for males and 0 for females

Health Implications

High body fat percentages can lead to various health issues. It's important to maintain a healthy body fat percentage for overall well-being.

Measuring Tips

  • Consistency is key: Take measurements at the same time of day, ideally in the morning before eating or drinking.
  • Proper technique: Use a flexible measuring tape and keep it snug but not tight.
  • Waist measurement: Measure at the narrowest part of your torso, usually around the navel level.
  • Neck measurement: Measure just below the larynx (Adam's apple), keeping the tape perpendicular to the long axis of the neck.
  • Hip measurement: Measure at the widest part of the buttocks with feet together.

Note:

This calculator provides an estimate of body fat percentage. For more accurate measurements, consider methods like DEXA scans, hydrostatic weighing, or consulting with a fitness professional. Body fat percentages vary based on age, gender, fitness level, and other factors.
